One of the most captivating offseason storylines is the free agency pursuit of Houston Astros infielder Alex Bregman. While the Astros and New York Yankees were initially considered frontrunners to sign Bregman, they now appear to be out of contention. Teams like the Detroit Tigers, New York Mets, and Boston Red Sox are seen as logical fits.
R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports predicts that the Red Sox will ultimately secure Bregman, citing their greater willingness to spend compared to the Tigers. Bregman is reportedly seeking a $200 million contract, a figure Boston might need to meet to acquire him. “He’s been linked to several teams this offseason, including the Yankees, Tigers, and Red Sox. (The Astros as well, but they’ve since brought in Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker for their corner infield spots),” Anderson wrote. “Back in November, I predicted Bregman would sign a six-year, $162 million deal, but he’s since turned down a six-year, $156 million offer from Houston, indicating he’s aiming higher. I trust Boston’s willingness to spend over Detroit’s, and that could be the deciding factor.”
Adding Bregman would be a significant move for Boston. Despite bolstering their starting rotation, the Red Sox haven’t spent heavily this offseason. They have the financial flexibility to pursue Bregman and should strongly consider doing so. If signed, Rafael Devers would shift to first base, while Triston Casas could split time between first base and designated hitter or serve as a trade asset. Either way, Bregman’s arrival would be a game-changer for the Red Sox lineup.
