The San Diego Padres are reportedly open to trading several of their star players to free up payroll and allocate funds elsewhere. Among the players rumored to be on the trade block is first baseman Luis Arraez, a left-handed hitter with an impressive career batting average of .323.
One team that could benefit from Arraez’s high-contact, low-strikeout approach is the Seattle Mariners. Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently identified the Mariners as the ideal destination for Arraez, even proposing a potential trade package. The suggested deal would send Arraez to Seattle in exchange for designated hitter Mitch Garver and infielder Michael Arroyo, the Mariners’ No. 12 prospect.

Rymer highlighted Seattle’s struggles with strikeouts, noting that Mariners hitters have consistently ranked among the bottom five in the American League for six straight seasons. With an opening at first base and a payroll likely stretched thin, a cash-neutral deal could be a perfect fit for Seattle. This arrangement might also appeal to San Diego, especially if it allows them to acquire a promising prospect from the Mariners’ deep farm system.
Arraez would be a major addition for Seattle, bringing his elite contact-hitting ability and strong discipline at the plate. On the other side, Garver, while a solid veteran catcher, is 33 years old and likely past his peak years. Arroyo, meanwhile, is a highly-regarded infield prospect coming off an excellent 2024 season.
This trade appears mutually beneficial, addressing needs for both teams, and could be a dream scenario for the Mariners.
