The San Diego Padres had an eventful weekend, signing right-handed reliever Logan Gillaspie and free-agent center fielder Cole Roederer to minor league deals. Gillaspie, who made nine appearances for the Padres last season, is returning to the organization. Meanwhile, Roederer, a former Chicago Cubs prospect, has spent parts of six seasons in the minors, primarily at the Triple-A level.
The Padres are also exploring a trade for starting pitcher Dylan Cease to trim payroll. The latest proposal involves sending Cease, 29, to the Boston Red Sox. With one year of team control remaining, Cease is projected to earn $13–14 million in 2025, and there’s a chance he could depart San Diego earlier than expected.
