Dabo Swinney is adjusting to the evolving college football landscape.
For years, Swinney resisted using the transfer portal, which was established in 2018, choosing not to strengthen Clemson’s roster with players from other schools. However, that stance shifted on Monday when the Tigers secured their first-ever non-quarterback transfer commitment.
Tristan Smith, a wide receiver from Southeast Missouri State, revealed on Monday that he would be transferring to Clemson, marking a significant addition for both the Tigers and Swinney.
Since 2021, Clemson has lost 43 players to the transfer portal. During the same period, only two players have joined the Tigers via the portal––quarterbacks Hunter Johnson and Paul Tyson, neither of whom saw significant playing time.
Tristan Smith, a junior, had an impressive 2024 season, catching 76 passes for 934 yards and six touchdowns. He also scored a rushing touchdown on his only carry. Smith will be an important asset for quarterback Cade Klubnik, assuming Klubnik returns for a third season at Clemson.
