The Boston Red Sox are openly seeking multiple starting pitchers this offseason, exploring both free agency and the trade market.
One name generating significant interest in trade discussions is Chicago White Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet. Speculation about Crochet’s availability has grown, with reports suggesting that the White Sox’s asking price continues to climb.
With the Red Sox reluctant to trade any of their top four prospects, what would a potential deal for Crochet look like?
According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, “A package of Triston Casas, Wilyer Abreu, and Connor Wong might be enough to acquire Crochet. The Red Sox could then fill the gaps by replacing Abreu with prospect Roman Anthony in right field, slotting Kyle Teal in at catcher instead of Wong, moving Rafael Devers to first base, and targeting free agents like Alex Bregman or Willy Adames.”
Casas, a former No. 1 prospect for the Red Sox, debuted in September 2022 and has since posted a .250/.357/.473 slash line with an .830 OPS (125 OPS+) across 222 games. The 24-year-old first baseman has quickly become a fan favorite thanks to his personality, unique approach to the game, and impressive poise and power at the plate. Trading him would be a divisive move.
While the White Sox have set a high price for Crochet, the Red Sox’s unwillingness to part with their top prospects could force a difficult decision about the future of Casas, a homegrown talent under team control through 2029.
