The San Diego Padres might need to navigate their payroll reduction efforts carefully if they hope to re-sign All-Star in free agency.
Profar wants three-year deal in FA
ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that Jurickson Profar is seeking a three-year deal in free agency, with projections suggesting he could earn up to $40 million annually (h/t Noah Camras of San Diego Padres on SI). If the Padres want to retain the Silver Slugger Award winner, they may need to commit as much as $120 million.
The Curacao native delivered a standout 2024 season, setting career-highs in RBIs (85), batting average (.280), on-base percentage (.380), and OPS (.839). His value was evident in his 3.6 WAR, underscoring his contribution to the team’s success.
While San Diego boasts a strong outfield featuring All-Star Fernando Tatis Jr. and reigning Silver Slugger Jackson Merrill, losing Profar’s dependable bat and solid defense in left field would be significant—especially if he ends up with a National League rival.
Padres will have to weigh finances next to Profar’s return
The Padres are reportedly exploring trades involving three-time batting champion Luis Arraez, ace Dylan Cease, and second baseman Xander Bogaerts this offseason. Arraez and Cease are nearing the final year of their contracts, while Bogaerts remains a long-term financial commitment with nine years left on his 11-year, $280 million deal. These stars could become casualties of San Diego’s cost-cutting measures, though such moves wouldn’t necessarily ensure Jurickson Profar’s return.
Currently, the Padres have $150.38 million committed for 2025 and a projected payroll of $206.72 million. Re-signing Profar at or near the $40 million annual mark would push their obligations to roughly $250 million—still below the $300 million luxury tax threshold. The next few days will reveal how aggressively the team prioritizes the 13-year veteran, particularly if rival clubs intensify their pursuit of his services.
