The Philadelphia Phillies traded reliever to the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday in exchange for minor league pitcher Aaron Combs, according to the MLB transactions page.
The Phillies had acquired Gilbert, a left-handed reliever, from the Cincinnati Reds in May via a cash deal. Gilbert spent much of the season in the minors but was called up twice by Philadelphia — first on August 17 and then on September 19.
In six appearances with the Phillies, Gilbert posted a 3.24 ERA over 8.1 innings, striking out four and walking two, without factoring into any decisions.
Gilbert began his professional career with the Phillies, who selected him in the sixth round of the 2015 MLB Draft. However, he made his Major League debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2021. Across three seasons with Arizona (2021–2023), he compiled a 2-7 record in 28 games (13 starts), with 64 strikeouts and 28 walks over 91.2 innings.
Aaron Combs, the incoming prospect, is remembered by college baseball fans as the closer who secured Tennessee’s College World Series title with a win over Texas A&M in June — the program’s first national championship. Combs was selected by the White Sox in the eighth round of the MLB Draft.
After his college season, the White Sox sent Combs to their Kannapolis affiliate, where he made six appearances, recording a 2-0 record with 13 strikeouts in 7.2 innings.
According to MILB.com, Combs has already been assigned to the Phillies’ High-A affiliate in Jersey Shore.
