The Chicago Cubs have been focused on assembling the best roster possible for the upcoming season.
Their major moves have included acquiring Kyle Tucker and trading Cody Bellinger to the New York Yankees, with other changes largely aimed at improving their organizational depth.
Pitching remains a priority for the Cubs leading up to Opening Day, but the key question now centers on the third base position. While top prospect Matt Shaw has a legitimate chance to secure the job, the Cubs aren’t ready to make a firm commitment and are still exploring other options.
One player they reportedly considered was Josh Rojas.
The veteran infielder had a strong year with the Seattle Mariners, and his excellent defense would be highly valued by the Cubs. However, Rojas is no longer available.
As reported by Scott Merkin of MLB.com, Rojas has signed a one-year deal with the Chicago White Sox, though the terms haven’t been disclosed.
Rojas seemed like a good fit for the Cubs. His versatile defense across the infield would have been an asset, providing depth in case Shaw struggled offensively or defensively in his first season.
The White Sox, currently rebuilding after a disappointing 2024 season, are bringing in experienced players like Rojas while waiting for their top prospects to develop.
It’s unclear how the Cubs will adjust to this development. They may have had Rojas as their top infield target and could now be content with their existing roster, or they might look for another player with a similar skill set.
