The Philadelphia Phillies face a potential shake-up next offseason, with several key players approaching free agency. After already losing a few contributors this past winter, more departures could follow as some players remain undecided about their futures.
The team’s actions over the next year will likely hinge on their performance this season. If the Phillies finally fulfill their potential and win a World Series, retaining veteran players could become a priority.
One notable player whose future is uncertain is Kyle Schwarber. At 31, Schwarber has been a cornerstone of the Phillies’ lineup over the past three seasons, consistently delivering power with at least 38 home runs in each campaign, including totals of 46, 47, and 38 since joining the team.
Replacing that level of production would be no easy task. However, if the Phillies fall short of expectations, significant changes might be on the horizon, and Schwarber could become a casualty of his pending free agency despite his impressive contributions.
A disappointing playoff run could prompt tough decisions from the front office. Jovan Alford of FanSided highlighted five players who might depart Philadelphia within the next year, naming Schwarber as one of them. With his contract set to expire after this season, the Phillies could find it relatively straightforward to move on.
“Phillies fans would hate to see Schwarber leave, as he’s delivered so many memorable moments in both the postseason and regular season,” Alford wrote. “Given his production at the top of the lineup, parting ways would be a tough call.”
While Schwarber’s potential departure would be hard for fans to accept, he isn’t the only beloved player whose future with the team may depend on how the 2025 season unfolds.
If Schwarber continues his offensive dominance and belts another 35-plus home runs, there’s a strong case for him to remain in Philadelphia—especially if he isn’t seeking an exorbitant free-agent deal.
Predicting his fate is challenging given how much can change in a year, but for now, the two-time All-Star seems secure.
