BREAKING: Chicago White Sox acquire another league right-hander key man plus Infielder Braden Shewmake was designated for assignment by the White Sox to make room on the team due to 31-year-old trade

 

CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox acquired left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.

In exchange, Chicago sent minor league right-hander Aaron Combs to Philadelphia. Gilbert, 31, posted a 3.24 ERA in six relief appearances with the Phillies last season.

To clear space on their 40-man roster, the White Sox designated infielder Braden Shewmake for assignment. Shewmake, 27, was acquired from Atlanta in November 2023 and hit just .125 (8-for-64) in 29 games with Chicago last season.

Combs, 23, was an eighth-round pick by the White Sox in the 2024 draft out of the University of Tennessee. He pitched 7 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run in six relief outings for Class A Kannapolis last season.

Gilbert was previously designated for assignment by Philadelphia after they acquired left-hander Jesús Luzardo in a trade with Miami on Dec. 22.

Standing 6-foot-3, Gilbert has a career record of 2-7 with a 4.23 ERA over 34 MLB appearances, including time with Arizona. Last season, he spent most of the year at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he went 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA across 31 relief outings.
