The New York Mets have had an impressive offseason following their National League Championship Series appearance last year. After acquiring Juan Soto this winter, they could aim to bring in another superstar next offseason.
The Mets secured Soto with a 15-year, $765 million contract. However, according to MLB Insider Robert Murray, while they are negotiating with Pete Alonso, they appear hesitant to offer him a long-term deal. If Alonso departs, the Mets are expected to pursue Vladimir Guerrero Jr. as a potential replacement. Alternatively, FanSided’s James Nolan speculated that Kyle Tucker could emerge as a target instead of Guerrero.
Tucker, who was traded from the Houston Astros to the Chicago Cubs this offseason, will become a free agent after the 2025 season and is projected by Spotrac to land a seven-year, $195 million contract. Known as one of the league’s premier offensive outfielders, Tucker boasts a career .870 OPS, three All-Star selections, and 125 home runs. Despite being limited to just 78 games last season, he still managed to hit 23 home runs, which put him on pace for a career-high in homers.
Pairing Tucker with Soto would provide the Mets with two elite outfielders for the future. In addition to his offensive prowess, Tucker is a Gold Glove winner, further enhancing his value. With owner Steve Cohen’s willingness to spend aggressively, the Mets are well-positioned to make a competitive offer if they decide to pursue Tucker.
Furthermore, if the Mets opt not to enter the Guerrero sweepstakes, they could focus their efforts on signing Tucker while other teams are preoccupied.
