Chris Cotillo of MassLive reports that the Boston Red Sox are engaging in preliminary discussions about a potential contract extension with left-hander Garrett Crochet, who was acquired from the Chicago White Sox in an offseason trade.
According to a baseball source, the two sides have already had some dialogue, though it’s unclear how close they are to reaching an agreement. Crochet remains under team control through the 2026 season, so there’s no immediate urgency, but the Red Sox are eager to strike a deal before he takes the mound in 2025.
If Crochet performs well in the upcoming season, his value could significantly increase, making an early agreement a more cost-effective option for the Red Sox. Teams often seek to secure team-friendly deals before a player’s performance drives up their price tag.
In his first full season as a starter in 2024, Crochet posted a 6-12 record with a 3.58 ERA for the White Sox. While the losses reflect the struggles of the team, Crochet’s talent is undeniable. He struck out 209 batters over 146 innings, earning a spot in the All-Star Game. Previously used as a bullpen arm since his MLB debut in 2020, Crochet made only 13 appearances in 2022 and 2023 while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
For 2025, Crochet is set to join a rotation that includes Walker Buehler, Brayan Bello, Tanner Houck, and Lucas Giolito. Meanwhile, Kutter Crawford and Garrett Whitlock appear to be on the outside looking in. The Red Sox will look to improve on their 81-81 finish, which placed them third in the AL East last season.
