The San Diego Padres have had a relatively quiet offseason, watching several of their top National League competitors make significant upgrades. While fans may be hoping for a more headline-grabbing move, reports suggest the Padres are exploring a potential trade with the Minnesota Twins for veteran catcher Christian Vázquez.
San Diego struggled to get consistent production from the catcher position in 2024, with Luis Campusano and Kyle Higashioka batting just .227 and .220, respectively. Although Vázquez hit only .221 with seven home runs, the Padres see him as an improvement over Campusano, prompting discussions about a potential deal.
“The Minnesota Twins and San Diego Padres have spoken about a potential trade that would send veteran catcher Christian Vázquez to San Diego, league sources told The Athletic. No deal was considered imminent Wednesday, but there appeared to be motivation on both sides to continue talking,” reported Dan Hayes and Dennis Lin.
Vázquez, who has 10 MLB seasons under his belt, has been a reliable presence behind the plate throughout his career. However, his performance over the past two seasons with the Twins has been underwhelming, both offensively and defensively. Despite this, he remains a defensive upgrade over Campusano, making it understandable why the Padres view him as an improvement.
While a trade isn’t close to being finalized, the Padres are actively looking to strengthen their roster, and Vázquez has emerged as a compelling option. Though it wouldn’t be a blockbuster move, this trade scenario is worth monitoring to see if San Diego and Minnesota can reach an agreement.
