The Green Bay Packers faced some tough lessons in 2024. At the start of the season, they were confident their wide receiver group would rank among the best in the NFL. Unfortunately, reality proved otherwise. Christian Watson had an impressive year, dropping just one pass and recording a career-high 620 receiving yards.
However, his teammates—Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks—combined for a disappointing 25 dropped passes.
Looking ahead to 2025, the Packers are likely to play most of the season without Watson, who tore his ACL in Week 18 against the Chicago Bears. While the team is hopeful that Doubs, Reed, and Wicks can rebound next year, they will still need to address their lack of depth at the wide receiver position.
Many Fans Believe the Green Bay Packers Need a WR1
When the Packers traded Davante Adams before the 2022 NFL Draft, they drafted three wide receivers to help fill the void and brought in free agent Sammy Watkins, who didn’t even finish the season with Green Bay.
The trend continued in the 2023 NFL Draft, where they selected three more wide receivers and signed undrafted free agent Malik Heath.
Although the current group of pass catchers has potential, none has established themselves as Jordan Love’s reliable, go-to target. While each has shown glimpses of that capability, consistency remains elusive.
This has led many fans and analysts to advocate for the Packers to pursue a top-tier wide receiver through free agency or trade. Tee Higgins and Davante Adams are two popular names among fans as potential solutions.
The Green Bay Packers Urged to Trade for Los Angeles Rams Wide Receiver Cooper Kupp
In a recent Clutch Points article, Dakota Zientek proposed that the Packers explore a trade with the Los Angeles Rams to acquire former All-Pro wide receiver Cooper Kupp:
“After their Wild Card exit in the 2024 NFL Playoffs, Los Angeles Rams receiver Cooper Kupp made cryptic comments about his future with Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford heading into the 2025 season.
“As a former triple-crown winner, Kupp is undoubtedly a top-tier talent. However, due to recurring injury issues and his advancing age, there’s speculation that his time with the Rams may have ended in their Wild Card matchup against the Washington Commanders.
“If the Packers can make it happen, trading for Kupp to support Jordan Love’s development seems like an obvious move, provided both sides can agree on a deal.”
Kupp’s 2021 season was historic, as he led the NFL in receptions (145), receiving yards (1,947), and touchdowns (16), earning the coveted wide receiver Triple Crown.
However, injuries remain a significant concern. Outside of 2019 and 2021, Kupp has struggled to stay on the field, missing 18 games over the past three seasons.
If the Packers aim to find a reliable replacement for Christian Watson, they may want to prioritize a player with a better track record of durability to ensure consistent production.
