The New York Mets kicked off the offseason by signing superstar Juan Soto. Since then, they’ve continued to add to their roster, but slugger Pete Alonso remains a free agent.
While Alonso could still return to Queens in 2025, the Mets must prepare for the possibility of him signing elsewhere.
Chinmay Sathe of Essentially Sports recently speculated that the Mets might pursue a blockbuster trade for St. Louis Cardinals infielder Nolan Arenado, as St. Louis is reportedly shopping their star third baseman.
“The team is now eyeing another star player: eight-time All-Star and Platinum Glove winner Nolan Arenado,” Sathe wrote. “While Soto’s addition has already strengthened the Mets’ lineup, acquiring a player of Arenado’s caliber would significantly boost their title chances. Widely regarded as one of the best third basemen in the league, Arenado brings a powerful bat and Gold Glove defense that would solidify the infield and free up resources for other team needs.”
However, Arenado’s contract could present a challenge. He’s owed approximately $74 million over the next three seasons, which might deter some teams. But under Steve Cohen’s ownership, the Mets have the financial flexibility to absorb such a deal comfortably.
Re-signing Alonso remains the Mets’ top priority, but if an agreement isn’t reached, a trade for Arenado could be a logical backup plan. The Mets could likely acquire him without giving up much in prospect capital, provided they take on a significant portion of his contract.
Shifting Mark Vientos to first base while Arenado takes over third would also provide a clear upgrade over the Mets’ current infield options.
