The Chicago Bears are expected to make significant changes to their offense in the 2025 NFL offseason under new head coach Ben Johnson. In his introductory press conference, Johnson vowed to “tear the offense down to the studs” and rebuild it around quarterback Caleb Williams and the team’s other key players for the upcoming season. One area to watch is whether Johnson will make a major move in the running back position, similar to what he did with the Detroit Lions.
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report speculates that the Bears could emerge as a “sleeper destination” for veteran running back Aaron Jones if the Minnesota Vikings don’t re-sign him. The 30-year-old has spent his entire eight-season career in the NFC North, with seven years at the Green Bay Packers before being cut in 2024. Johnson, who faced Jones regularly as the Lions’ offensive coordinator, knows the running back’s capabilities well. Knox notes that Johnson could be interested in pairing Jones with D’Andre Swift to form a dynamic backfield duo similar to what he had in Detroit with Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. While Roschon Johnson is a promising option for the Bears, Knox believes Jones would provide an upgrade to Chicago’s backfield.
Jones has accumulated 7,078 rushing yards, 2,484 receiving yards, and 70 total touchdowns in his career. In 2024, he had his best season yet with the Vikings, totaling 255 carries, 1,138 rushing yards, and 51 receptions for 408 yards. He also scored seven touchdowns and played in all 17 games for just the second time in his career. Despite these impressive numbers, Knox points out that the Bears might not seem like the most obvious landing spot for Jones.
