NHL analyst Jordan Manning has identified Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras as a potential trade target for the Montreal Canadiens. Zegras, who carries a $5.8 million average annual salary, is known for his offensive skill and dynamic playmaking. Manning suggests that adding Zegras could strengthen the Canadiens’ playoff push by providing depth as a second-line center or left winger. His friendship and potential on-ice chemistry with Canadiens winger Cole Caufield could further enhance Montreal’s offensive production.
The Canadiens are well-positioned to pursue such a move. With a 24-21-5 record, they are just two points behind an Eastern Conference wildcard spot. General Manager Kent Hughes has about $6.45 million in cap space and holds nine picks in the first four rounds of the 2025 NHL Draft, giving him plenty of trade assets. Additionally, pending unrestricted free agents like David Savard, Christian Dvorak, and Joel Armia could create further cap flexibility.
Zegras, 22, has showcased his elite skill set with highlight-reel plays, including lacrosse-style “Michigan” goals, and led the Ducks with 65 points last season. Though he has struggled this season due to a contract dispute and injuries, limiting him to seven points in 20 games, his talent remains undeniable.
Acquiring Zegras would not only fill the Canadiens’ need for a skilled second-line forward but also inject youth and energy into their lineup as they push for a playoff spot.
