The Green Bay Packers are heading into a crucial offseason following an 11-6 record in 2024 and a disappointing Wild Card loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Now, general manager Brian Gutekunst must make key decisions regarding coaching staff and roster changes, all with the ultimate goal of contending for a Super Bowl. The Packers have already made some coaching adjustments, including bringing back Luke Getsy as an offensive assistant, but their success will largely depend on free agency and the NFL Draft.
With seven draft picks and roughly $42 million in cap space, per Over the Cap, Green Bay is well-positioned to make impactful moves this offseason. One potential decision being discussed is whether to trade cornerback Jaire Alexander.
Could the Packers Trade Jaire Alexander?
In a recent Bleacher Report article, Alex Ballentine highlighted Alexander as a possible trade asset for Green Bay. His injury history is a primary concern, as the two-time Pro Bowler has played just 14 games over the past two seasons. In 2023, he suffered a shoulder injury in Week 8 against the Rams, sidelining him for six games. This season, a groin injury cost him two games before he sustained a torn PCL on the final play of a Week 8 win against Jacksonville. While he attempted to return against Chicago, he lasted just ten snaps before re-aggravating the injury.
When healthy, Alexander is a difference-maker in Green Bay’s secondary. A two-time Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro, he has tallied 12 career interceptions, including a pick-six in just seven games last season. However, his durability issues and sizable cap hit make his future in Green Bay uncertain. Given the team’s focus on long-term roster construction and cap management, moving Alexander could free up resources for other pressing needs.
Potential Trade Destination: Jacksonville Jaguars
If the Packers trade Alexander, they could save $6.8 million while potentially acquiring valuable draft capital. Ballentine suggests the Jacksonville Jaguars as a possible trade partner, citing Alexander’s connection to Jaguars defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile, formerly a linebackers coach in Green Bay.
“There’s a decent amount of risk in acquiring Alexander, but the Jags are in a position where they might need to take some risks,” Ballentine wrote. “They have the cap space to be aggressive and need to close the gap on the Texans in their division. If Alexander can return to form, this trade would be a bargain.”
