Former Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera has found a new job—but it won’t be on an NFL sideline this fall. Instead, Rivera is returning to college, taking on a general manager-like role at his alma mater, the University of California.
Rivera led Washington from 2020 to 2023 after spending nine seasons as head coach of the Carolina Panthers (2011-2019), where he won NFL Coach of the Year twice. Over his coaching career, Rivera holds a 102-103-2 record, including a 26-40-1 stint with Washington.
Along with coaching, Rivera effectively served as Washington’s general manager, making several controversial roster decisions. Notably, none of his four first-round draft picks remain with the team.
Since being fired in January 2024, Rivera has interviewed for multiple roles, including head coaching positions with the New York Jets and Chicago Bears and a defensive coordinator role with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Now, he shifts gears and returns to the college level. Given his track record with personnel decisions in Washington, Commanders fans will likely have strong opinions on his latest career move.
