If the Washington Commanders were at a junior high school dance, they’d be the one everyone wants to slow dance with.
Despite football being the ultimate team sport, all the top free agents, trade targets, and draft prospects are waiting to see if the Commanders choose them—largely because of one player: quarterback Jayden Daniels. The rookie Pro Bowler and favorite for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year was the driving force behind Washington’s 12-5 season and NFC Championship Game appearance, their first since 1991. His electrifying debut has made the Commanders one of the most desirable landing spots in 2025.
Daniels acknowledged the team’s newfound appeal during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on February 4, live from Radio Row before Super Bowl LIX.
“I mean, right now, I’d much rather be getting ready to play in the (Super Bowl) instead of talking with you,” Daniels told McAfee. “… But it’s cool to see how people want to play for us and get drafted by us. I know the fans are excited to see that too.”
Commanders Have Unprecedented Salary Cap Flexibility
A 12-5 record, a conference championship appearance, and nearly $100 million in salary cap space is an unusual combination in the NFL—maybe even unprecedented.
A major reason for this unique situation? Years of poor performances and bad draft decisions. By mid-2024, the Commanders no longer had any of their first-round picks from 2019-2023 on their roster. Cornerback Emmanuel Forbes (2023) was cut midway through the season, while Montez Sweat (2019) and Chase Young (2020) were traded in 2023. Jahan Dotson (2022) was dealt to the Eagles in August 2024, and linebacker Jamin Davis (2021) was released midseason.
With no high-priced first-round contracts on the books, the Commanders now have immense financial flexibility to reshape their roster.
Myles Garrett a Potential Trade Target
Washington’s biggest needs in free agency appear to be an elite edge rusher and a wide receiver. While some suggest making a splash move for a top-tier receiver, drafting one might be the smarter approach, especially with veteran Terry McLaurin already established as WR1.
A more thrilling prospect for the Commanders is a possible trade for six-time All-Pro and 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett. The star pass rusher requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns on February 3.
According to Heavy.com’s James Dudko, Garrett expressed interest in joining Washington while speaking with ESPN’s Mina Kimes during Super Bowl week. When asked if he’d be open to playing alongside Jayden Daniels, Garrett responded with a simple, “Absolutely.”
