JUST IN: Minnesota DL commit 5-star sets his deal done just now

Forest Lake (Minn.) defensive lineman Howie Johnson has been among the state’s top players for years. As a sophomore in 2023, he racked up 80 tackles, 28 tackles for loss, and seven sacks for the Rangers. He took his production up another level this past fall, finishing with 87 tackles and 32 tackles for loss—totaling an impressive 60 TFLs with his senior season still ahead.

Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 255 pounds, Johnson is also an elite track and field athlete. His 59-foot shot put throw from this past spring ranked sixth nationally among sophomores. Having observed Johnson in person for over a year, it’s clear he dominates in camp settings, often competing against players a year or two older. While he projects as an interior defensive lineman, his pass-rushing potential is significant. He possesses exceptional quickness and explosiveness off the line, paired with verified strength. His violent hands make him a force in shedding blocks, which explains his ability to rack up nearly 30 TFLs in a single season.

Johnson received an offer from Minnesota last summer and committed immediately. Following his Junior Day visit two weeks ago, he has now scheduled his official visit to the Gophers for May 30.

Reflecting on the departure of his defensive line coach, Johnson expressed both gratitude and optimism.

“I’m happy for Coach DeLattiboudere,” he said. “He’s getting closer to his dream of coaching in the NFL, and I knew this was bound to happen. Of course, I’m a little disappointed that I won’t get the chance to be coached by him, but this isn’t about me. I’m grateful for the relationship we built, and I know Coach Dott is going to do a great job.”

Looking ahead to his senior season, Johnson is focused on refining his technique and adding size.

“I’m working on my footwork, hand technique, football IQ, and gaining some weight. I’m at 255 right now and aiming for 265-270,” he said. “As for my commitment to Minnesota, there’s no doubt in my mind that I made the right choice.”
