Before the 2024 NFL season, Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst expressed a desire to see the team return to its reputation as a “quarterback factory.” During Brett Favre’s prime, the Packers developed several backup quarterbacks who later became successful NFL starters, including Mark Brunell, Matt Hasselbeck, and Aaron Brooks.
However, Gutekunst’s vision may take some time to materialize. The two quarterbacks he initially selected to compete for Jordan Love’s backup role were both released before the season started. Sean Clifford is now on the Packers’ practice squad, while Michael Pratt has joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice squad. Currently, Malik Willis serves as Green Bay’s backup quarterback.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Tim Boyle Has Bounced Around the NFL
Although the Packers haven’t produced any starting-caliber quarterbacks outside their own ranks in recent years, they have excelled at drafting and developing reliable backups. One example is Tim Boyle, whose consistent presence on NFL rosters underscores his value as a professional.
Boyle’s value is evident to the point where the journeyman quarterback has overtaken $40 million starter Daniel Jones on the New York Giants’ depth chart.
This season, Daniel Jones has a completion percentage of 63.3%, with 2,070 passing yards, eight touchdowns, seven interceptions, and a passer rating of 79.4.
As mentioned in the post, the Giants have named Tommy DeVito their starting quarterback moving forward. Packers fans will recall DeVito from last season’s game, where Green Bay’s defense faltered during a late-game meltdown. After Jordan Love led the offense down the field for a go-ahead touchdown with less than two minutes remaining, Joe Barry’s defense allowed DeVito and the Giants to drive into field goal range for the game-winning kick.
In that game, DeVito completed 17 of 21 passes for 158 yards, a touchdown, and no interceptions. He also ran for 71 yards on 10 carries and was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Tim Boyle Constantly Finds Work in the NFL
Tim Boyle signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He made the 53-man roster that year as a backup behind Aaron Rodgers and DeShon Kizer but did not see any playing time.
In 2019, Boyle became Rodgers’ primary backup, a role he continued in 2020, even though the Packers had selected Jordan Love in the first round of the NFL Draft that year.
However, in 2021, Green Bay chose to elevate Love to the backup role, and Boyle was non-tendered. He didn’t remain jobless for long, though, as he later spent time with the Detroit Lions (2021), Chicago Bears (2022), New York Jets (2023), Houston Texans (2023), and Miami Dolphins (2024).
