The Boston Red Sox have had a somewhat inconsistent Spring Training.
For the most part, camp has been a success, and Boston appears poised to make a serious playoff push for the first time in a few years. The team made significant additions, bringing in Alex Bregman, Garrett Crochet, and Walker Buehler to bolster the roster.
While things are trending in the right direction, the third base situation has sparked plenty of discussion. Will Bregman take over as the everyday third baseman, or will Rafael Devers—who has held the position for years—remain in his usual role?
At this point, it’s uncertain, but the situation should resolve itself. However, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com recently mentioned on The Fenway Rundown podcast that Devers may be feeling some frustration over the situation.
“I’m pretty certain there is frustration that over the winter, (Rafael Devers) was repeatedly assured, ‘Oh, that stuff you’re reading about (Nolan Arenado) and Bregman, that’s just the media speculating, we’re not actually doing that,’” McAdam said.
It’s understandable that Devers might be frustrated if his role is shifting unexpectedly, especially after spending the last eight seasons with the big league club at just 28 years old.
Ultimately, the Red Sox should be strong in 2025. As long as both Bregman and Devers are producing at the plate, the lineup will be formidable, and the defensive alignment will sort itself out.
