The Los Angeles Chargers enter the new league year with a significant amount of cap space, positioning themselves well for free agency. Their initial focus will be on retaining key in-house free agents who played a crucial role in last season’s 11-6 campaign.
However, competition from other teams will influence free agency decisions. For veteran players nearing the end of their careers and prioritizing a championship, a team like the Philadelphia Eagles could be an enticing destination.
Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, widely regarded as one of the best in the league, has a strong track record of attracting top-tier free agents. Philadelphia, which secured a Super Bowl LIX victory with a dominant defense, aims to maintain that strength. If edge rusher Josh Sweat departs for a lucrative deal, the Eagles might turn to a proven pass rusher like Khalil Mack as a replacement.
ESPN’s Aaron Schatz projected one free-agent signing for each team and linked Mack to the Eagles.
“There’s no question that Mack had a down year in 2024, despite making another Pro Bowl. His sack total dropped from 17.0 to 6.0, and his pass rush win rate slightly declined from 13.8% to 13.0%. He also recorded fewer pressures, falling from 53 in 2023 to 41 in 2024. Still, Mack possesses considerable pass-rushing ability, and the Eagles could utilize him in a more limited, specialized role,” Schatz wrote.
For Mack, such a role could be highly appealing, offering a lucrative contract while reducing his workload compared to his time in Los Angeles. While the Chargers might be able to match the Eagles’ financial offer, they can’t provide the same immediate championship opportunity.
Philadelphia has also been linked to trade rumors involving Myles Garrett, which would make their defense even more formidable. However, adding Mack alone would be an intimidating prospect for opposing teams.
The Chargers may take a cautious approach with Mack, evaluating his market and determining whether they can compete with other offers. An alternative move for them could be signing Josh Sweat as his replacement.
