The Houston Astros experienced a turbulent offseason, initially appearing poised to go all-in before trading outfielder Kyle Tucker and allowing Alex Bregman to leave in free agency.
To compensate, they brought in corner infielders Christian Walker and Isaac Paredes while also considering shifting second baseman Jose Altuve to the outfield.
With Tucker gone and Altuve potentially moving to the outfield, Houston has the flexibility to acquire a superstar to pair with him. One ideal target is currently in Chicago, playing for the White Sox.
A potential Astros-White Sox trade could bring Luis Robert Jr. to Houston. In 2023, Robert posted a .264/.315/.542 slash line with 38 home runs and 36 doubles. Although he regressed slightly in 2024 due to injuries, he remains an elite talent. Acquiring him would be costly, but if he returns to his 2023 form, it would be a worthwhile investment.
As part of the deal, the White Sox would receive several promising prospects.
- Dezenzo (24): A corner infield prospect who hit .242/.277/.371 in 62 MLB at-bats last season. While not yet a star, he has potential and would fit well in Chicago’s rebuilding efforts.
- Brito (20): A right-handed pitcher who dominated in his first year of professional baseball. With a fastball in the mid-to-high 90s and two quality breaking pitches, he has significant upside.
- Alvarez (17): A young, talented outfielder with star potential, though he has yet to be tested in affiliated baseball.
- Baez (21): One of Houston’s best power hitters, recording 21 home runs and 25 doubles in just over 100 minor league games last season.
While this package may not match the rumored Juan Soto-level return the White Sox initially sought, it still represents a significant haul for their franchise cornerstone.
For Houston, acquiring Robert would provide a star outfielder to replace Tucker and ease Altuve’s transition to the outfield. With Robert’s strong defense, Altuve would have valuable support in his new role.
