The New York Giants are just hours away from entering the legal tampering period, aiming to secure a veteran quarterback.

While it’s uncertain how things will unfold, recent reports suggest the Giants have narrowed their search to two veteran options expected to hit the market this week: former New York Jets star Aaron Rodgers and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson.

The way other quarterback-needy teams negotiate will influence the Giants’ chances of landing one of these players. According to Matt Johnson of Sportsnaut, New York is predicted to sign Wilson as a bridge quarterback while preparing for a rookie signal-caller.

Johnson speculates that with the Steelers re-signing Justin Fields in free agency, Wilson will have limited options. While the Jets might consider him, they are unlikely to be competitive in 2025. Instead, Wilson would opt for the Giants, where he’d benefit from a No. 1 receiver in Malik Nabers, a quality play-caller, and a solid one-year payday. Importantly, this move wouldn’t prevent New York from trading up for the first overall pick to select Cam Ward. While unconventional, it could be the best solution for both the Giants’ short-term and long-term plans.

Although much of the initial focus will be on Wilson’s potential arrival, the real priority is ensuring a long-term quarterback solution. Wilson isn’t an ideal long-term answer but has shown enough flashes to be considered a viable bridge option. Additionally, his reputation as a strong teammate could aid the development of a rookie quarterback.

After missing the first six games of the 2024 season due to a calf injury, Wilson started 11 games for the Steelers, completing 63.7% of his passes for 2,482 yards (225.6 YPG), 16 touchdowns, five interceptions, and a 95.6 passer rating.

While those stats appear solid, they don’t tell the full story. Over his final eight games, he averaged just 218.1 passing yards per game and 10 total touchdown passes—barely over one per game. Whether the struggles were due to Pittsburgh’s offense or Wilson himself remains a question the Giants must evaluate.

As for his market value, Spotrac projects Wilson to command a two-year, $77.47 million contract, while Pro Football Focus estimates a similar deal at two years and $60 million.
