This move would undoubtedly energize the Los Angeles Chargers’ fanbase.
The San Francisco 49ers are making significant roster cuts to free up cap space for quarterback Brock Purdy, who is expected to land a massive contract—potentially among the biggest in the league. While the exact figures are still up for debate, the team is undergoing a partial rebuild to accommodate his deal.
ESPN’s Ryan Clark recently suggested that the 49ers should consider trading Christian McCaffrey this offseason. At first glance, that might seem far-fetched, but is it really? San Francisco has already traded Deebo Samuel and allowed several key free agents to walk, including Dre Greenlaw, Talanoa Hufanga, and Charvarius Ward, while also parting ways with longtime fullback Kyle Juszczyk.
Though trading McCaffrey would be surprising, Kyle Shanahan’s offense is adaptable enough to handle such a transition. If McCaffrey were to hit the trade market, Anthony Palacios of Last Word on Sports views the Chargers as a potential landing spot.
“After giving J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards a one-year opportunity, signing Najee Harris signals what head coach Jim Harbaugh wants in a running back—a physical, tough runner. However, maximizing Justin Herbert’s prime window should be a priority, and McCaffrey could provide the explosiveness the Chargers’ ground game needs,” Palacios wrote.
While acquiring a player of McCaffrey’s caliber is tempting, the Chargers just committed $9.2 million per year to Harris. Trading for McCaffrey would likely be expensive, making such a move seem unlikely.
A Harris-McCaffrey backfield would undoubtedly be a potent duo, but given the team’s current direction under GM Joe Hortiz and Harbaugh, it doesn’t align with their strategy. The Chargers have ample cap space and have yet to make a blockbuster signing beyond adding Harris and retaining Khalil Mack.
Although the idea of McCaffrey in a Chargers uniform is exciting, it’s more of a long shot. The 49ers are unlikely to trade their best player, and even if they did, the Chargers don’t seem like the most probable destination.
