The Los Angeles Chargers made a significant move in free agency by securing one of the top offensive linemen available, signing massive guard Mekhi Becton to a two-year deal on Friday evening, per Tim McManus of ESPN. Becton, who excelled for the Philadelphia Eagles during the 2024-2025 season while remaining healthy, is set to continue playing guard with the Chargers—the same position he thrived in with Philadelphia.
Standing at an imposing 6-foot-7 and 363 pounds, Becton is a towering presence even by NFL standards. He originally joined the Eagles on a one-year deal in April 2024, shifting to guard due to limited opportunities at tackle. The transition proved to be a resounding success, as Becton delivered one of his best professional seasons.
In 15 games with Philadelphia, he played 903 snaps, accounting for 88% of the team’s total offensive snaps—the second-highest total of his career. His blocking was instrumental in paving the way for star running back Saquon Barkley, who had a career-best season with 2,005 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on 345 carries.
Becton, Barkley, and the Eagles’ dominant rushing attack were key factors in the team’s Super Bowl run. Now, with the Chargers, Becton will join forces with former Notre Dame standout Joe Alt (6-foot-8, 322 pounds), creating a formidable duo on the offensive line. Under head coach Jim Harbaugh—known for his commitment to the running game—Los Angeles could feature an exciting ground attack in the upcoming season.
