We’re closer to Week 12 than Week 11, but I’m still fuming over how Matt Eberflus managed to coach the Bears into yet another loss. Despite a hard-fought effort against the Packers, a lack of smart decision-making late in the game led to Cairo Santos having his game-winning field goal attempt blocked. Eberflus continues to be a liability, Santos is becoming a concern, and Ryan Poles has some explaining to do as well.
This marks the second time this season where the blame for a loss falls more on coaching than the players. After firing Shane Waldron, the Bears promoted Thomas Brown to offensive coordinator, and in his first game, the offense already showed significant improvement. The team played with better rhythm, executing quick, efficient plays, making the loss even more frustrating.
Considering how many coaches have resigned or been fired in the past year or two, it’s surprising that someone on this staff is starting to gain national attention.
Thomas Brown deserves a chance to be a head coach
Every year, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network releases a list of young coaches who deserve attention, and while the standout name is always someone like Ben Johnson, there are often some under-the-radar mentions as well. This year, I was stunned to see Thomas Brown not just mentioned but highlighted prominently on his list. Pelissero didn’t just give him a nod—he gave him the recognition he deserves.
The list features 22 names, and here’s what Pelissero had to say about Brown:
“Brown now finds himself in a familiar position: taking over play-calling duties in-season for a No. 1 overall pick on a struggling unit. And while Chicago lost to Green Bay on a last-second blocked field goal last week, there were signs of progress. Caleb Williams had a 95.0 passer rating, 391 yards of offense, 12-for-19 on third and fourth downs, and over 36 minutes of possession.”
It was clear how well the offense was performing, and now they need to build on that momentum. Brown has a fantastic opportunity to prove himself and possibly secure a head coaching role in the near future. Honestly, I think Ryan Poles and Kevin Warren should take a bold step: fire Matt Eberflus and promote Thomas Brown to interim head coach. This move would allow the organization to evaluate Brown in a leadership role rather than waiting for him to interview in the offseason. Consider it a sneak peek into his potential.
