Florida’s defensive back group for the 2025 season took a hit on Wednesday night, as redshirt freshman safety Gregory Smith III announced to On3 that he plans to enter the transfer portal.
Smith’s departure marks the Gators’ first spring loss to the portal. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 217 pounds, the former four-star recruit will have four years of eligibility remaining as he looks to continue his college career elsewhere this fall. Coming out of Sumner High School in Riverview, Florida, Smith had received an impressive 28 scholarship offers, according to On3.

On3 reports that Smith will officially enter the portal when it opens on April 16. During his lone season with the Gators, he played in five games in 2024, including the bowl matchup against Tulane, recording five tackles and a pass breakup.
Ranked No. 545 overall in the 2024 class and the No. 12 athlete nationally by the 247Sports Composite, Smith originally chose Florida over programs like Ole Miss, Virginia, Vanderbilt, Toledo, and South Florida.
