Bill Belichick won’t be pursuing Nico Iamaleava.
North Carolina is reportedly no longer in the mix for the former Tennessee quarterback, who entered the transfer portal last week following a dispute over his NIL deal with the Volunteers.
On Monday, Iamaleava had been linked to several schools, including UCLA, Tulane, and UNC, but according to Pete Nakos of On3, the Tar Heels have now backed out of the race.
Instead, UNC has shifted its focus to South Alabama’s Gio Lopez. The redshirt freshman impressed in 2024 with a 66.0% completion rate, 2,559 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He also added 463 rushing yards and seven scores on the ground.
With Iamaleava’s steep NIL expectations and the timing of his transfer, it’ll be intriguing to see where he ends up. Belichick and the Tar Heels distanced themselves from the situation just hours after their names were first mentioned.
