When Tennessee wide receiver Bru McCoy went undrafted and didn’t sign with a team as a free agent, it raised some questions. Now, it’s clear why—McCoy has decided to step away from football for good.
On Tuesday night, McCoy announced on social media that he is medically retiring from the sport. It’s a tough break for the talented receiver, who was a fan favorite in Knoxville. Though his playing days are over, McCoy is preparing to embrace the next chapter of his life.
“It’s with a heavy heart but a deep sense of gratitude that I share I’ve made the difficult choice to medically retire from football,” McCoy said in his statement. “After thoughtful discussions with my doctors, family, and closest supporters, I believe this is the best decision for my long-term health and future.”
McCoy also expressed his appreciation for the support he’s received from Vols fans throughout his journey. Once a 5-star recruit, he began his college career at USC before transferring to Tennessee.
The 6-foot-3 receiver spent three seasons with the Volunteers, tallying 108 catches for 1,356 yards and seven touchdowns. He delivered some clutch plays for head coach Josh Heupel, including a memorable catch against Alabama that Vol fans won’t soon forget.
While McCoy may not have had eye-popping stats, he was a consistent and reliable target, helping Tennessee to a 10-win season and a College Football Playoff appearance. His contributions left a lasting mark on the program.
