CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers released veteran pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney on Thursday after drafting two young edge rushers in this year’s NFL Draft.
Clowney, the top overall pick in 2014, recorded 5.5 sacks last season for Carolina. two-year, $20 million contract.
Looking to get younger at the position, the Panthers selected Texas A&M’s Nic Scourton in the second round and Mississippi’s Princely Umanmielen in the third. They also added free agent Patrick Jones II to their edge rusher group, which includes D.J. Wonnum, DJ Johnson, Amare Barno, Kenny Dyson, Thomas Incoom, and 2021 second-rounder Boogie Basham.
In other moves, Carolina placed 2024 second-round running back Jonathon Brooks on the physically unable to perform list, sidelining him for the entire 2025 season. Brooks re-tore the ACL in his knee as a rookie, repeating the same injury he suffered during his final year at Texas. To bolster the backfield, the team signed former Cowboys running back Rico Dowdle and drafted Georgia’s Trevor Etienne in the fourth round.
The Panthers also waived tight end Colin Granger via injury settlement and released tight end Jordan Matthews, wide receiver Dax Milne, and waived wideout T.J. Luther, offensive lineman Andrew Raym, and defensive tackle Jerrod Clark.
