Payton was the first to post on X, encouraging @jacantwell2499 with a message: “Trade that Midwest cold for the Miami heat! The energy’s unmatched, the confidence is real, and the brotherhood is second to none. Come make history in The 305. #Canes .”
During his time at Miami from 1999 to 2003, Payton rushed for 1,496 yards and 10 touchdowns, adding 28 receptions for 226 yards and another score. In his senior season alone, he ran for 985 yards and seven touchdowns while catching 17 passes for 136 yards and one more touchdown.
Payton’s standout performance came in the 2004 Orange Bowl, where he ran for 131 yards on 22 carries and earned MVP honors as Miami beat Florida State in their final Big East appearance. After college, he played professionally in the NFL, CFL, World League, and Continental Indoor Football League.

Carey suited up for Miami between 2000 and 2003. He stepped in as a starter during the 2001 national championship run and held down the right tackle spot throughout his junior year. In 2003, Carey shifted to right guard, starting 11 games and earning third-team All-American honors.
Selected 19th overall by the Dolphins in the 2004 NFL Draft, Carey spent all eight of his pro seasons (2004–2012) with the team. Following retirement, he returned to Miami Northwestern, his high school, to serve as an assistant coach.
Cantwell is currently ranked as the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2026 class by both 247Sports Composite and On3 Industry Rankings. With two senior starters expected to graduate and junior Francis Mauigoa likely to declare for the 2026 NFL Draft, Cantwell would have a strong chance to start as a true freshman if he joins the Hurricanes.
