BREAKING NEWS: White Sox adapt the starting pitching rotation after losing Jonathan Cannon to injury. Tuesday’s game against the Detroit Tigers, the exact plan remains

CHICAGO – The White Sox are adjusting their starting rotation following Jonathan Cannon’s injury, but their exact strategy heading into Tuesday’s matchup with the Detroit Tigers is still in flux.

Manager Will Venable confirmed Shane Smith will take the mound Tuesday as scheduled, while Wednesday will be handled by the bullpen. Normally, Sean Burke follows Smith in the rotation, with Davis Martin, Adrian Houser, and Cannon rounding it out.

With Cannon now on the 15-day injured list due to a lower back strain, the team has recalled right-hander Caleb Freeman from Triple-A Charlotte. Freeman, who hasn’t started a game since 2017 at Texas Tech, has made four relief appearances for the White Sox this season, in addition to 14 in Charlotte and three in Double-A.

“We’re adding [Freeman] to the mix and seeing where things stand over the next few days,” Venable said.

 

Bryse Wilson, who has a 6.80 ERA in five starts and 12 relief outings this year, last started on May 24 when Cannon was scratched. He could be an option to step back into the rotation, although Venable wasn’t ready to make that call.

“We haven’t settled on anything yet,” Venable said. “Wilson threw a lot yesterday, so he’s down for now. We’ll evaluate things tomorrow with the bullpen in mind. It’s really a day-by-day situation.”
