The Phoenix Suns are reportedly narrowing down potential trade destinations for their 15-time All-Star and two-time NBA Finals MVP, Kevin Durant.
As Durant’s trade situation continues to develop, the Miami Heat have emerged as a leading candidate to acquire the future Hall of Famer, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. Miami, under team president Pat Riley, is determined to climb the Eastern Conference ranks and re-establish itself as a legitimate title contender in the 2025-26 season—a goal a Durant trade could help achieve.
However, there’s considerable risk involved. What if a blockbuster move for the 36-year-old backfires? Could betting the future on Durant jeopardize the franchise’s long-term trajectory? In a cautionary piece, the NBA staff at FOX Sports highlighted the potential downsides of such a deal.
“This is a Heat team that was swept in the first round this year and hasn’t won a best-of-seven playoff series since its Finals appearance in 2023,” they noted.
They also pointed to the possible cost: sacrificing young assets and future picks. While there’s hope that Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo can reach All-NBA levels, dealing promising players like Nikola Jovic, Kel’el Ware, or Jaime Jaquez Jr. might not align with Miami’s long-term interests.
Additionally, questions remain about Miami’s ability to compete with top-tier Eastern Conference teams even with Durant in the fold.
“If the Heat land Durant, are they really on the same level as the Pacers, Knicks, or a fully healthy Celtics squad? That’s a stretch,” FOX Sports wrote.
While Boston’s dominance may be in question due to Jayson Tatum’s Achilles injury, the East remains tough. Whether a core of Durant, Herro, and Adebayo is enough to make a serious playoff push is uncertain.
Still, if the Heat do go all-in on Durant, his impact could be significant—just not without potential consequences.
