Five-Star LSU Football Commit Texas Longhorns over their rivals

Missouri City (Tex.) Hightower safety Kade Phillips flipped his commitment from the Texas Longhorns to LSU in August, bolstering Brian Kelly’s roster with another highly sought-after defensive back.

Phillips initially committed to LSU as a mid-tier four-star prospect but has surged in recruiting rankings over the past year. In a recent update from On3 Sports, Phillips earned a fifth star and is now ranked as the No. 4 cornerback in the nation, solidifying his elite status. Despite his commitment, top programs across the country have continued their pursuit of the talented Texas native.

Amidst LSU’s recent recruiting challenges—most notably, five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood flipping to Michigan—other programs have intensified efforts to sway Phillips. Reports emerged suggesting Phillips might visit the Longhorns this weekend, with Texas aiming to bring him back into their fold. However, Phillips confirmed to LSU Tigers On SI that he will not make the trip and instead will stay home, reaffirming his commitment to LSU. He plans to visit Baton Rouge next weekend for an unofficial visit during LSU’s game against Oklahoma to wrap up his recruitment.

For LSU, retaining Phillips is a crucial win, especially as the program faces scrutiny following Underwood’s departure. The Wolverines secured Underwood with an NIL package reportedly exceeding $10.5 million over four years, leaving LSU focused on shoring up its 2025 recruiting class.

The Tigers’ top remaining commitments, including five-star running back Harlem Berry and No. 1-ranked cornerback DJ Pickett, now face heightened attention. Berry, who pledged to LSU in January and has been instrumental in the program’s recruiting efforts, reaffirmed his loyalty following Underwood’s decision. He has made several visits to Baton Rouge this season and continues to stand firm in his commitment.

Meanwhile, LSU will look to solidify its class during the Early Signing Period on Dec. 4, aiming to keep Berry, Pickett, and other blue-chip prospects as cornerstones of the program’s future.
