The New York Mets new center fielder at the trade deadline, and Jarren Duran of the Boston Red Sox has emerged as a particularly compelling option.
The key question is whether Boston would actually move Duran. While it may not be the most likely outcome, the Red Sox’s recent blockbuster trade of Rafael Devers shows that no player is untouchable.
Duran earned All-Star honors in 2024 and finished the year with an impressive 8.7 bWAR. However, nearly halfway through the 2025 season, his production has dipped to just 1.4 bWAR, and he’s currently in the midst of a two-week slump.
Despite the downturn, Boston would likely demand a strong return, as Duran is under team control through 2028. Whether the Mets would be willing to meet that price remains to be seen.
On Thursday, Metsmerized writer Eitan Hain projected that acquiring Duran would likely cost the Mets two Top 100 prospects: right-handed pitcher Brandon Sproat and outfielder Carson Benge.
“Duran is unlikely to be dealt since he’s productive, affordable, and under control — plus Boston is aiming to contend,” Hain noted. “But if he hits the market, any team needing outfield help should be prepared to strike. His elite speed, hard contact, and high ceiling make him a risk worth taking, and his solid floor justifies a multi-prospect offer.”
One other consideration: although Duran played excellent defense in both left and center field in 2024, his 2025 numbers have slipped — with four errors and just one defensive run saved. He may be better suited for center, but Ceddanne Rafaela currently holds that role in Boston.
When he’s at his best, Duran is a difference-maker. The question is whether the Mets are willing to bet he can find that level consistently in New York.
