The Chicago Cubs are performing well this season, but they still need to make roster improvements if they hope to seriously contend for the National League pennant and a World Series title. One of the most pressing needs is in the bullpen, and the team is expected to explore trade options to address it.
According to FanSided’s Christopher Kline, one potential target is Pittsburgh Pirates reliever David Bednar—though a trade between division rivals would be unusual. “After a disastrous 2024 season, Bednar has bounced back for the Pirates,” Kline noted. “While he’s not quite the All-Star he once was, he still racks up strikeouts with a powerful fastball and a sharp curveball.” Despite past resistance from Pittsburgh to move Bednar, their lack of playoff hopes and financial limitations could make a deal more likely this year. The Cubs, with a strong farm system, might have enough to entice the Pirates into making a deal.
Bednar began the year on a rough note but has recently regained form, making him a compelling trade candidate. Chicago might have to part with a few of their top-30 prospects to acquire the veteran right-hander. Pairing Bednar with Ryan Pressly could give the Cubs a formidable late-inning duo—exactly what they need for a deep playoff push.
