TORONTO — The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed forward to a four-year contract extension, valued at an average annual salary of $4.38 million, the team announced.
Tavares had just wrapped up a seven-year, $77 million contract that he signed as a free agent back in 2018. He was poised to hit unrestricted free agency on Tuesday.
The 34-year-old centre, a native of Mississauga, Ontario, tallied 38 goals and 36 assists across 75 games in the 2024–25 season — his highest goal total since the 2018–19 campaign, when he netted a career-best 47 goals in his debut season with Toronto.
Originally drafted first overall in 2009 by the New York Islanders, Tavares has amassed 494 goals and 620 assists over 1,184 career NHL games. He’s also recorded 28 goals and 25 assists in 75 playoff appearances.
Internationally, he helped Team Canada capture gold medals at both the 2014 Winter Olympics and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
