The 21-year-old has committed to a five-year deal with Sunderland after agreeing to personal terms and completing his medical. He becomes the latest signing under Régis Le Bris this summer, following Enzo Le Fée’s move from AS Roma.
After finalizing the move, Diarra shared his excitement: “I’m thrilled to join Sunderland and can’t wait to experience the Stadium of Light and its supporters. The club’s success last season was clear to see, and I’m fully committed to giving my all for the team and representing these colours in the Premier League. I’m ready for the challenge and eager to get going.”
Sunderland Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman commented on the signing: “Habib is a thrilling young player, and we’re proud to bring him to Sunderland. Despite being just 21, he’s already made over 100 senior appearances and captained a team in one of Europe’s top leagues.
“That speaks volumes about his ability and potential. His signing is a testament to the progress we’re making and our ambitions for the future. Like the club, Habib is prepared for the Premier League, and we’re excited to take this next step together.”
Diarra wore the armband for Strasbourg during a standout 2024-25 campaign, which ended with the team qualifying for European competition for just the second time in two decades.
He led the youngest squad in Ligue 1, making 31 appearances, scoring five goals, and providing four assists while surpassing the 100-game milestone in senior football.
Though he represented France at youth level, including the Under-21s, Diarra chose to play for Senegal in 2024. He has earned 11 international caps so far, including a match against England last month in which he scored during a 3-1 victory.
