The Cincinnati Reds have agreed to a minor league contract with right-handed pitcher, according to Robert Murray of FanSided. Farmer was previously with the Angels on a minor league deal but was released a few weeks ago, per MLB.com’s transaction log. While he’s expected to eventually join Triple-A Louisville, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Farmer will first head to the Arizona Complex League.
Farmer, 34, is a familiar presence in Cincinnati, having pitched for the Reds from 2022 through 2024. During that time, he threw 193 innings with a 3.68 ERA, a 24% strikeout rate, and a 10.3% walk rate—solid production overall.
However, 2025 has been a rougher year for the veteran. He’s been stuck in Triple-A, signing minor league deals with both the Braves and Angels before being released by both teams. Across 16 2/3 innings this season, he’s posted an 8.64 ERA. Some of that may be due to misfortune, given his .423 BABIP and a low 50.6% strand rate. His strikeout rate of 21.7% is close to average, but his walk rate has climbed to 13.3%. His 4.61 FIP suggests his actual performance hasn’t been quite as poor as his ERA indicates.
The Reds are currently dealing with multiple injuries on the pitching front, having lost Graham Ashcraft and Ian Gibaut from the bullpen and placed starters Hunter Greene and Wade Miley on the injured list in June. Farmer will look to regain form and position himself as a potential option if the team needs another arm.
