The Denver Broncos raised eyebrows when they used a high third-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on Illinois wide receiver. With a relatively modest 4.61-second 40-yard dash and far less buzz than some of his draft peers, Bryant wasn’t on many fans’ radar—making the pick a controversial one.
But Bryant wasted no time proving he belongs. During his first NFL OTAs and minicamp, he stood out in a big way.
Although many Broncos fans questioned the selection, reports from those in attendance at practices suggest the rookie made an immediate impression. ESPN’s longtime Broncos reporter Jeff Legwold highlighted a standout moment when Bryant made a spectacular catch over first-round pick Jahdae Barron—arguably the best catch of the entire minicamp.
While playing time may be limited behind veterans like Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims Jr., and rookie Troy Franklin, Bryant has firmly inserted himself into the conversation by building on his strong offseason showing.
Bryant was never hyped for his athleticism, but his football skills speak volumes. In fact, there were reports that the Jacksonville Jaguars were frustrated when Denver snatched him off the board—he was on their radar for a later pick.
The Broncos had an inside track thanks to defensive assistant Jim Leonhard’s ties to Illinois head coach Bret Bielema, giving them deeper insight into Bryant’s makeup. Head coach Sean Payton noted that the team felt Bryant’s skill set was already well suited for their offense.
Bryant’s strengths lie in his sure hands, toughness after the catch, competitiveness at the catch point, and willingness to do the gritty work of a true receiver. His concentration and ability to haul in difficult catches are standout traits.
Despite lacking elite speed, Bryant creates separation through polished route running and initial burst. He wins with technique and timing, often making catches in tight coverage and at contested points.
It wouldn’t be surprising if Bryant soon becomes one of rookie quarterback Bo Nix’s go-to targets.
