Bournemouth have now entered the competition alongside Sunderland to sign Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic this summer.
According to journalist Sacha Tavioleri, Chelsea are willing to part ways with Petrovic after he requested to be left out of their Club World Cup squad. The Serbian international reportedly sought assurances over a starting role, which the club refused to provide, prompting him to explore other options.
The entire Petrovic saga is bordering on the absurd. A loan move never should have happened in the first place, especially given that he consistently outperformed Robert Sanchez. Former Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino even described him as “fantastic” following a clean sheet against Aston Villa.
Petrovic demonstrated his quality during his loan in France and returned to find Sanchez still struggling—yet he remains on the sidelines. Despite Sanchez’s continued poor form, Petrovic hasn’t been given a fair shot in the starting XI, even during key tournaments like the Club World Cup.
Chelsea arguably still need Petrovic, yet they appear determined to offload him without lining up a proper replacement. With Max Allegri confirming that AC Milan’s Mike Maignan is staying put, the Blues’ options are narrowing.
Instead of offloading Petrovic, Chelsea should be looking to move on from underwhelming options like Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen, paving the way for Petrovic and promising talent Mike Penders.
At 25, Petrovic is a top-class shot-stopper whose distribution notably improved during his spell at Strasbourg. Letting him go could prove to be a costly mistake for Chelsea, especially given his status as one of Europe’s standout goalkeepers this past season. He should be playing regularly for the Blues
