Leeds United have made a bold statement ahead of their Premier League comeback by securing the signing of a major star on a lucrative deal believed to be worth £7.8 million per year.
While the club has yet to officially announce the player’s identity, sources indicate the signing represents a marquee addition—highlighting Leeds’ intent not just to stay up, but to genuinely compete in the top flight. The player, reportedly earning around £150,000 per week, ranks among the highest-paid in the club’s history.
Leeds reportedly beat off strong competition from clubs across England and Europe to land the seasoned professional, who was among the most in-demand free agents this summer thanks to his consistent performances at the top level.
Meanwhile, Leeds are also exploring deals for several British players as they bolster the squad. Angus Gunn, recently released by Norwich City, is under consideration as a potential upgrade on current goalkeeper Illan Meslier. Another name linked is Newcastle midfielder Joe Willock, who may be tempted by regular starts—something he’s struggled to find behind the likes of Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton.
However, the most exciting prospect for many fans could be the potential return of Kalvin Phillips. Speaking to LeedsUnited.News, journalist Graeme Bailey confirmed that Leeds are seriously pursuing a reunion with the Manchester City midfielder.
“Everyone is waiting for his injury recovery and when he’ll be ready to move. City are open to a cooperative loan deal, and Leeds are definitely in the mix,” Bailey said. “They know exactly what he brings. He wants to return, and they’re optimistic he’ll be fully fit by next month.”
Bailey also noted that Phillips is unlikely to remain a City player beyond August, and while his £150,000-a-week wages may be difficult for Leeds to cover, there’s growing hope he would consider a wage reduction to rejoin his boyhood club.
After his heroics for Leeds and England, and despite recent injury setbacks and a tough loan spell at Ipswich, Phillips could still play a key role under Daniel Farke—making this one of the most anticipated potential transfers of the summer.
