Sunderland are reportedly eyeing a sensational move for former Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka, while also advancing negotiations for Colombian defender Jhon Lucumí, according to multiple reports.
Sunderland Targeting Xhaka in Bold Move
Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri claims that the Black Cats are in discussions with Bayer Leverkusen regarding a €10 million (£8.5m) deal for Xhaka. The 32-year-old midfielder, who helped Leverkusen win the Bundesliga title under Xabi Alonso, is said to be considering his future amidst interest from Saudi Arabian side NEOM SC.
Tavolieri notes that Sunderland’s owner, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, is personally involved in the negotiations and that the club has offered Xhaka a three-year contract in a move that would mark a clear shift from their usual focus on younger talents. Bringing in a player of Xhaka’s Premier League and international experience would signal serious intent as Sunderland look to strengthen their leadership core and push for promotion.
Lucumí Bid Expected Soon
Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Sunderland are preparing a formal bid for Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumí. The 27-year-old Colombia international has a €28 million (£23.8m) release clause, which is set to expire shortly, though Sunderland are hoping to agree a deal outside of that clause.
Lucumí played a pivotal role in Bologna’s Coppa Italia triumph last season and has been a regular in Serie A. His addition would be timely, with Sunderland’s defense depleted due to injuries to Luke O’Nien, Aji Alese, Dennis Cirkin, and Leo Hjelde. Head coach Régis Le Bris has stressed that reinforcing the backline is now a top priority.
The move is also aided by the familiarity of director of football Florent Ghisolfi, who previously worked at Roma and is well-acquainted with Lucumí’s profile.
Ongoing Interest in Bilal El Khannouss
Sky Sports’ Keith Downie reports that Sunderland also continue to monitor Leicester City’s Bilal El Khannouss. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder was previously tracked during his time at Genk and remains a potential target, though no active negotiations are underway at present.
El Khannouss, valued at around £21 million, would bring flair and creativity to Sunderland’s midfield, especially following the departure of Jobe Bellingham to Borussia Dortmund.
These developments suggest Sunderland are taking a more ambitious and strategic approach to their summer recruitment, blending proven experience with promising talent as they aim to return to the Premier League.
