The Cleveland Cavaliers have made some smart, low-key moves this offseason, especially given their constraints as a second-apron team. But Koby Altman and the front office still have work to do, as there’s one more open roster spot to fill before training camp begins.
One potential candidate for that spot is free agent guard Victor Oladipo. According to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, a source shared that a member of the Cavs’ front office recently attended Oladipo’s workout in Las Vegas. The 33-year-old is looking to revive his NBA career by proving to teams that he’s healthy and still capable of contributing on the court.
Fedor also highlighted that Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert was a big admirer of Oladipo before the 2013 draft and wanted the team to take him with the No. 1 overall pick—though Cleveland ultimately selected Anthony Bennett.
Andy Quach from Cavaliers On SI made a solid case for why the Cavs should consider signing the two-time All-Star. Of course, adding Oladipo comes with risks. He’s struggled with injuries over the years and has played in 30 or more games only twice since the 2020-21 season. He hasn’t seen action in an NBA game since 2023, when he played 42 games, averaging 10.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 3.5 assists, while shooting 39% from the field and 33% from three.
That said, if Oladipo could contribute 10-15 minutes off the bench with solid scoring and playmaking, he could still be a valuable addition. Since the Cavaliers are over the second apron, they’d be limited to offering him a veteran’s minimum contract.
