While the Knicks appear to be a logical fit for Ben Simmons — the former No. 1 overall pick, Rookie of the Year, and three-time All-Star — skepticism remains around the league about whether a deal will actually happen. Simmons’ career has been derailed in recent years by a controversial contract standoff and persistent back issues.
At 6-foot-10 with the ability to defend and play multiple positions, Simmons could add depth off the bench. However, with Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele already bolstering the second unit, and the front office focused on developing young prospects like Tyler Kolek and Pacome Dadiet, it’s unclear where Simmons would fit in the rotation.
More importantly, Simmons’ disappointing stint with the Nets has reportedly made him hesitant to return to New York. Despite mutual interest, sources suggest the Knicks aren’t a serious contender for his services.
“They’re at the bottom of the list,” one league GM said. “He doesn’t want that level of scrutiny, and they’re trying to keep the roster flexible — that’s part of why they moved on from Thibodeau. Bringing in a veteran with durability concerns would only slow down their development plan.”
Simmons is also considering the Celtics, Kings, and Suns. Sacramento and Phoenix would offer a low-pressure environment, while Boston could give him a defined role on a contender, albeit one currently without Jayson Tatum.
Simmons has played just 108 games over the last three seasons due to various injuries, averaging 2.9 points in 18 appearances with the Clippers to end last year.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, a decision is expected soon.
“He’s likely to make a choice in the next week,” Windhorst said. “The Kings, Suns, Knicks, and Celtics have all been in the mix.”
