The St. Louis Cardinals may be just days away from parting ways with one of their most iconic players.
Not long ago, the idea of Nolan Arenado being traded this summer felt unlikely—mainly due to his full no-trade clause and the team’s promising start to the season. But that outlook has shifted. According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, a deal now appears possible, with several teams reportedly in the market for a third baseman—including the Chicago Cubs.
Feinsand noted, “The Yankees made an early move by acquiring Ryan McMahon, but Eugenio Suárez remains the headliner of this Trade Deadline. Still, multiple teams—the Cubs, Mariners, Tigers, Brewers, Reds, Astros, and Phillies—are all exploring third base options. Sources indicate Nolan Arenado, who was at the heart of offseason trade talks, could be dealt before Thursday’s 6 p.m. ET deadline.”
Of course, Arenado holds full control over his future with a no-trade clause, and he’s already used it—reportedly vetoing a move to the Astros last December after both sides had agreed on terms.
He’s still owed $42 million over the next two seasons, with $27 million due in 2026 and $15 million in 2027. That includes $6 million in deferred money next season and $5 million covered by the Rockies as part of the original trade that brought him to St. Louis in 2021. The Cardinals may need to eat part of that contract to get a deal done—but with the organization eager to make room for emerging young infield talent, that might be a price they’re willing to pay.
So, are we witnessing Nolan Arenado’s final days in a Cardinals uniform? The clock is ticking.
