The New York Knicks are still in search of one final piece to round out their roster, aiming to use their remaining veteran minimum slot. While they’ve explored several potential signings, their pursuit of one notable name appears to be fading.
Knicks Unlikely to Sign Ben Simmons in Free Agency
According to NBA insider Sean Deveney, who spoke with an anonymous league executive, the Knicks are no longer viewed as a serious contender to land former All-Star Ben Simmons.
“Of the places he [Simmons] could land, they’d [Knicks] be at the bottom of the list. They’re the long shot,” the GM told Deveney. “He doesn’t want the scrutiny. And the Knicks want roster flexibility — that’s part of why they moved on from [coach] Tom Thibodeau. Bringing in a veteran who might miss half the season could block the development of their young core.”
Simmons was viewed as a potential bench contributor for New York, especially with their ongoing search for backcourt depth. Despite his recent decline, his elite defense and playmaking could have added value to a Knicks team with championship ambitions.
Knicks Likely to Explore Other Options
With Simmons likely off the table, the Knicks are expected to shift focus toward other free agents. They’ve reportedly shown interest in re-signing Landry Shamet and could consider Malcolm Brogdon as well.
Although Simmons won’t be heading to Madison Square Garden, the Knicks remain active in their quest to finalize a roster built for a deep postseason run.
